Philosophy
The federal School of Psychiatric Nursing, Calabar takes cognizance of the fact that Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing uses the study of human behavior as its science and purposeful use of self as its art. Therefore, the principles that guide the implementation of the school curriculum are based on certain beliefs about people and their potential to grow.
We believe that:
1. Man is a complex Bi-osocial, cultural and spiritual being whose behaviour pattern develops
from psychogenetic inheritance and interaction with the environment.
2. That learning would be meaningful when human dispositions are properly guided
toward meeting a greater goal for the society.
3. That psychiatric nursing is an applied science and art that employs the intellectual,
interpersonal and technical skills of an individual to assist clients in achieving
maximum well-being.
4. That psychiatric nursing education enableS the nurse develop specialized skills in
psychiatric nursing and it also encourages continuous improvement of practice by
updating knowledge with current literatures and Continuing Education Programme.
5. That to achieve health for all, psychiatric nursing practice embraces the concepts of
Primary Health Care in all ramifications. Thus being in a position to provide mental
health care in all settings.
